This opinion piece is by Bill Carpou, CEO of OCTANe, a multi-faceted organization with a tech and lifesciences accelerator, and soon-to-be incubator. See related story on the incubator here.
At OCTANe’s High Tech Awards last week, Carpou shared six key imperatives that he said OCTANe has learned from other ecosystems, in terms of what it takes to build a strong startup community.
He elaborates on them here…
Innovation & Ideas — OCTANe has over 500 entrepreneurs that have utilized the LauchPad accelerator. It’s focused on the industries that drive OC, mainly cybersecurity, fintech, data analytics, med-device, pharma and healthcare IT, with a keen focus on ophthalmology, medical aesthetics, neurology and cardiovascular. Additionally, we have relationships with every major university across SoCal.
Capital — OCTANe created the Visionary Ventures funds and has relationships across the U.S. In the first half of this year, OCTANe portfolio companies raised $307 million.
Infrastructure — We are launching an incubator to be in the Great Park and with LaunchPad have perhaps the most successful accelerator in the country. Included in the OCTANe ecosystem are the highest-level strategic service providers that can help these companies grow.
Community — the OCTANe ecosystem is the largest. Supporters, sponsors and partners of OCTANe include most major corporations and an important sector of the startup and mid- market companies. Many of the influential leaders serve on the OCTANe board
Growth Resources — this is the fundamental reason for the creation of OCTANe Enterprise Solutions. See related article on OES here.
Center of Gravity — once anyone understands the full power of the Great Park, that will be the center of gravity. With OCTANe, the City of Hope hospital, the entertainment aspect, our new innovation center and the entire vision of Emile Haddad, (CEO & Chariman, FivePoint Holdings), this is a certainty. A city is being built there!
