*UPDATE: Details on UCI Applied Innovation’s Move

As OC Startups Now first reported on February 8, (see story here), UCI Applied Innovation, (the university’s innovation platform), will be moving to the former Broadcom HQ at UCI Research Park.

Here are some more details about that move: UCI Applied Innovation will expand its presence at UCI Research Park, as will University Lab Partners, a nonprofit program of the Beall Family Foundation, according to an Irvine Company press release supplied by UCI Applied Innovation.

UCI Applied Innovation is a platform for the OC entrepreneurial ecosystem which includes the UCI campus, entrepreneurs, inventors, investors and the business community.

All work in synergy to collaborate and commercialize discoveries and have an economic effect that leads to innovations, growth and job creation.

UCI Applied Innovation currently occupies 46,000 s.f. at 5141 California Ave., known as “The Cove.” It, along with University Lab Partners, has leased roughly 84,000 s.f. at 5270 California Ave. UCI’s innovation center will occupy the first and second floors, formerly occupied by Broadcom.

University Lab Partners will take up residency on the third floor. It plans to create a wet lab incubator for entrepreneurs to rent lab space to commercialize their research and inventions.

UCI Applied Innovation is already in talks for additional space at this new location.

“UCI Applied Innovation has already created deep ties between the university and the business community,” Steve Case, EVP of Irvine Company Office Properties, said in the release. “The expansion of The Cove and the addition of University Lab Partners will distinguish UCI Research Park as a unique place for business to collaborate with a top-tier university to solve problems, create opportunity and spur business and regional economic growth.”

Formerly called University Research Park, the 185-acre business park owned by the Irvine Company is undergoing $100 million in reinvestment and tenant improvements.

UCI Research Park is home to more than 75 companies and more than 8,000 employees, including Cisco Systems, Intel and Toshiba America.
